As one of the Seven Summits, Carstensz Pyramid is a prestigious mountain, a goal for many climbers in the world as an outstanding achievment for them. Anticlinal peak with an altitude about 4.884 meter above sea level, emerged from the bottom of deep sea millions of years ago due to collision of Pacific and Hindia-Australian plates. Form a highest point of Indonesia-Oceania in chain of Sudirman mountain ranges, covered with tropical glaciers located in the middle of the jungle in Papua Island, the second largest island on earth. Another summits part of Lorentz National Park with icecaps are Jaya Peak (4.864 m), Sumantri Peak (4.872 m) and East Carstensz Peak (4.813 m). Only a small snowy area left of hundreds kilometers in the massive of Middle Mountain-ranges with an old limestone rock divides that island.

Jan Carstensz was a Dutch sailor who recorded it specifically while sailing in the southern coast of Papua Island. It became a burlesque when he reported it to the country about his first sight of equatorial glacier in the mountains. However, several hundred years later the evidence of glaciers in fact exposed in two other areas near the equator line, uncovered in Kilimanjaro-Africa and also in Peruvian Andes-South America. Unfortunately, this only three remaining tropical glaciers of the world, these days are beginning to shrink due to global warming, and are expected to disappear in the next few decades.

Helicopters are the fastest alternative way to basecamp in the Carstensz area, cuting the long journey about 50 kilometers of treking in the dense tropical rainforest of Papua Island. Surely, acclimatization is mandatory and very important here, as you will fly directly to basecamp at an altitude of over 4.000 meter above sea level from Timika city located at only 300 meter. Climbing Carstensz Pyramid is quite technical, the 600-meter-high bigwall became the last part of this journey, requires basic climbing skills using a fixed rope to reach the highest point before returning to basecamp.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The unpredictable situation in Papua due to minimalty of access and transportation, lack of facilities and social conditions of locals who aren't yet mindful of tourism should be understood by guests. For example, if we are unluckily blocked by a group of villagers who ask for money. Many things are sometimes difficult to predict here, but we have experience and always try our best to anticipate and solve this problem. Provide guests with excellent service and solutions for a team in order to successfully complete the journey safely and comfortably. You should also prepare flexible time and flight schedule for contingency.
